Frankie Machine (Frank Sinatra) is an ace card dealer and mechanic. After a stay in federal prison, he overcomes his heroin addiction. Now he tries to begin a new life and cure his crippled wife. His former girlfriend, former boss and former pusher all need Frankie for their own ends too. Overcoming his past is harder than he thought.
